Its kind of tempting. I have the money, want to learn how to drive a manual, and really want a convertible here in Florida.

It runs, is the older, cooler body style, and really not something seen every day.

get it. $1300 convertible that runs. It's a no brainer. Also it is the beginning of summer.

Needs some GTI upgrades but yeah, they're not bad little runarounds if you don't need to take the freeway. If you're dating someone, they make great date cars for going to the beach or whatever. SOmething fun and different without being too....."enthusiast". Like a converted miata speedster with no windscreen or roof? It's a convertible, in a sense, but not many people want to drive one let alone be a passenger.

My sister had a car just like it. I drove it to Florida for Spring Break. I had to buy tires during the trip. It was weird how quickly it lost tread :-)

I'm sure someone will come along and tell you how it isn't reliable or whatever, but I'd be very happy to be able to buy this. Even though I live in a state where convertibles are basically useless.

That was really my thinking.. I want to learn how to drive a stick and want a convertible. I live in a town with a very cool old school downtown island area: its perfect for that!

And I'd want to do that; maybe get a set of GTI rims, lower it like an inch or two (NOT FULL STANCE), and maybe upgrade interior bits.

But 1300 for a running convertible?

My thinking exactly. And it seems like a good car to learn stick on!

Check the top and where the top seals. Bring a bucket, fill it with water, splash the roof and see if/where it leaks.

This is the second gen/mk2 body styling for the golf-based drop top. Good price, the 8v in it is bullet proof and it's not a bad car to learn manual on at all. The transmission is not my favorite (020A from the 16v mk2's and the diesels are the best), but you can do much worse.

Things to find out before buying: Does it grind going into 2nd? the 8v tranny (can't remember its designation right now) weren't as durable as the 020a's and the synchromesh would get worn down by people quick shifting into second without any care. My first mk2 did that and I ended up adding Pennzoil synchromesh tranny fluid, which helped quite a bit.

Only other issues would top (obviously) and make sure the strut towers aren't rusted. Also, the AC is pretty much useless without a charge unless you get an r134a conversion done, if that is even a concern for you.

All in all, the price is right. Just do your homework a bit and should be happy with the purchase.
